SUMMARY:Activist Training: South West Wales - Day 1
DESCRIPTION:Come to our Drug Policy reform training workshop and equip yourself to become an active campaigner for safer drug laws.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nBuilding upon the success of our three Regional Drug Policy Reform Meetings in South West Wales at the end of last year\, we are running two activist training days for those wishing to develop their knowledge and campaigning skills. \nThursday 27th February 9.30am-3.00pm. St Peter’s Civic Hall\, Nott Square\, Carmarthen\, SA31 1BA. \nWe will be looking at how we can campaign together to raise public awareness of the need for policy reform and to show our politicians and other representatives at different levels of government\, policing and the treatment services\, that there is widespread support for\, and evidence in favour of\, change. \nWe will provide you with skills and knowledge needed to campaign for change in South West Wales. The training will include practical advice\, short presentations\, interactive sessions\, and briefing materials to take home. There will be plenty of opportunity for active participation in presenting evidence and engaging in debate. \nThe training will be suitable both for those new to political lobbying and for more seasoned activists. It will cover the basics of how to make the case for the legal regulation of drug supply\, how to lobby politicians and other representatives\, how to find common ground with and convince your MP of the urgent need for change\, and how to link policy to local issues of public concern such as the spiralling numbers of drug related deaths in South West Wales\, the increase of drug consumption\, the abuse of children in County Lines\, the proliferation of complex and dangerous new drug types\, and the need for easier access to regulated drugs\, particularly cannabis\, for medical uses. Dedicated sessions will focus upon immediately necessary policy innovations in our region such as the provision of safe injecting and drug testing facilities and the use of heroin assisted treatment. \nHelp us to end the drug war\, protect families and save lives. The two Training Days will be followed by the formal launch of a South West Wales Drug Policy Reform Activist Group later in the spring which will campaign and organise events in South West Wales to spearhead reform. \n\nPlease register today for one of the training sessions.

SUMMARY:Drug Policy for the 21st Century: How can Labour Prioritise Health and Development in its Approach to Drugs
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Labour Party Conference with Health Poverty Action \nThe so called ‘war on drugs’ is collapsing. From Canada to Portugal\, Bolivia to New Zealand\, countries around the world\, are replacing outdated drug policies that destroy people’s health and livelihoods with alternatives such as decriminalisation and legal regulation. \nThese reforms have huge potential to protect health and human rights\, and repair the years of damage caused by of prohibition.  But they must put people’s rights at the forefront to avoid putting power in the hand of big business who are likely to prioritise profit over people. \nJoin us to debate what drug policy reforms need to look like to reduce inequality and protect people’s health\, and how Labour can champion both domestic and international development policies that promote people and public health. \nSpeakers include: \n\nJon Ashworth – Shadow Secretary of State for Health\nDavid Lammy MP\nPat Hudson – Anyone’s Child\nMartin Drewry – Health Poverty Action\nUmzimbuvu Farmers Support Network

SUMMARY:UK Policy\, Race\, Cannabis & Business
DESCRIPTION:UK POLICY\, RACE\, CANNABIS & BUSINESS \nBlaksox\, Transform Drugs Policy Foundation\, Operation Black Vote & Stopwatch come together\, supported by Father 2 Father\, Manhood Academy Global & Viv Ahmun to organise a ground breaking panel on UK Drugs policy reform hosting Shaleen Title\, an Attorney and Drugs Commissioner from the US . Book your place now! \n \n“Black people are nine times more likely to be stopped and searched for drugs. In the capital\, the chances of a BAME person being arrested for the possession of cannabis is 3.4 times that of a white person. Taking cannabis out of the hands of street dealers and putting it behind the counter in shops with security guards and ID requirements would help protect those under 18.” \nDavid Lammy MP \n“Our community has disproportionately suffered from the UK’s irrational drugs legislation (violence\, criminalisation and mental ill health). We must ensure that when the UK’s drugs legislation finally catches up with the rest of the progressive world\, our young men and the wider black community do not miss out on the financial returns to be had from taxation and business opportunities\, as we have seen in America.” \nViv Ahmun\, Founder Blaksox \nShaleen Title – Keynote Speaker is an Indian-American drug policy activist and attorney who currently serves as one of five commissioners on the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission\, the agency tasked with regulating legal and medical marijuana in the commonwealth.
